Extend the life of your assets

How one company used fabric maintenance to avoid an expensive replacement

“Your assets are important. They’re the key resources that generate value for your business and allow it to operate. Organizations today face a major challenge in prolonging the life of assets as harsh environmental conditions increase risks of deterioration. Whereas in the past companies would be faced with the expensive and time-labouring burden of replacing assets, that can now be avoided by the continual maintenance and protection of fabrics.”

Client Challenge

A client contracted Trinidad Inspection Services (TIS) to inspect and repair a gas flare which was experiencing significant corrosion.

Gas flaring is a combustion device used to burn unwanted or excess flammable gases released during normal or unplanned over-pressuring operations, and helps protect production sites from the dangers of over-pressured equipment.

Systems like these should be regularly maintained and tested to reduce the risk of fires and explosions on site.

However, the unpredictable nature of plant operations does not allow for safe, in-service inspection or repairs; repairs must be done during an outage or turnaround.

TIS Solution

TIS conducted an inspection of the gas flare structure and gas flare tip together with its components. The inspection was done via rope access which is a safe, quick and reliable method of carrying out inspection and remedial work in difficult locations, allowing minimal impact to parallel turnaround operations occurring in close proximity.

The team of IRATA-certified technicians found several areas of the structure to be severely corroded subsequent to power cleaning and abrasive blasting.
Severe corrosion had led to heavy metal loss on the supporting structure. The flare tip was also severely damaged. For these areas, structural repairs were made via rope access including surface preparation, welding and fabrication, and TIS technicians were able to confidently restore structural strength to the asset.

To ensure soundness of repairs, further inspection was carried out including Ultrasonic Testing (UT) that utilizes sound waves to detect cracks and defects in materials, and Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) which is used to detect surface and shallow subsurface discontinuities in most ferromagnetic materials.

The job was concluded by painting all materials with Hempel coatings supplied by TIS, which are engineered to provide long-lasting corrosion protection. Pleased with the execution and timeliness of the job, the client was able to continue operations with the confidence of knowing that the flare was structurally sound, repairs were accurate, and it would be able to perform at its optimum.
